This series of artwork is by my father, Lim Hwee Tiong, who is an established second-generation artist in Singapore who honed his art in watercolours over more than 50 years. From the humble art lessons that he took at neighbourhood community centres during his teenage years, he discovered a lifelong passion in watercolour art and has never stopped painting since. During his formative years as a young boy, he was mentored in the most informal way by the likes of Lim Cheng Hoe and Goh Sing Hooi, and was heavily influenced by their approach to art. Like his mentors, he believed in self-study, observation, and great amounts of practice and experimentation. My father carried on a busy F&B business until his retirement in 2018, but he faithfully painted every weekend and during whatever spare time he had over five decades. His achievements have been widely recognised by the art community, and he is especially noted for his penchant for innovation and boldness with the watercolour medium. Just like the Singapore he loves, his art has evolved with the times from traditional realism to a highly expressive and contemporary style in his pursuit to explore the full potential of the ephemeral watercolour medium.
