The acupoint is in the depression directly below the lateral malleolus, posterior to the peroneal tendons.

The other name of Shenmai is “Extending Vessel” which refers to this acupoint’s double function as the Master Point for the Yang Motility acupuncture meridian, one of the Eight Extra acupuncture meridians that is said to have overall control of the body’s locomotion.
Shenmai is the opening and beginning of the Yang Motility Vessel (Yang Qiao Mai) and many of its functions are related to this attribute.
Yin and Yang Motility Vessel also harmonized the left and right of the Yin Yang Channels. Some symptoms can be improved by stimulating the point such as one leg being longer than the other, one scapula being higher than the other or sweating only on one side of the body.
