Fennel is among the nine plants mentioned in the pagan, Anglo-Saxon Nine Herbs Charm, which was documented in the 10th century. The Egyptians and Chinese utilize it exclusively for medicinal purposes.

The ancient Romans considered fennel to be the herb of vision, with the root extract frequently incorporated into tonics aimed at clearing cloudy eyesight. In 1611, the Italian herbalist Pierandrea Mattioli dedicated several pages of his herbal remedy folio to formulas based on fennel, his native plant, addressing urinary, bronchial, and digestive issues.

During the Middle Ages, fennel was thought to possess magical properties. It was common for people to hang it above their doors as a safeguard against malevolent spirits.
