Ask Me Anything Series: Are Acupuncture Needles Hollow?

Many people still have the misconception that acupuncture is like Western Medicine injections in which medicine is injected into points on the body. There are also many differences between Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine which you can read in my older blog post.

Acupuncture needles stimulate, not inject

As a matter of fact, acupuncture needles inject nothing into the body and are merely stimulating points on the body to achieve the desired treatment outcome. You can read in my other blogs of why acupuncture works.

For Western Medicine injections, medicines are introduced into the bloodstream and result in chemical reactions to bring about changes to the body. For Acupuncture, nothing is introduced into the body because the medicine to heal is already existing in the body. The needles just bring out the potential for the rebalance to happen.

Acupuncture needles are solid

As there is no need for injection of foreign medicines into the body, it is hence not necessary for acupuncture needles to be hollow like the syringes of injection needles. Acupuncture needles are solid.

Acupuncture needles come in different sizes of diameters

In fact acupuncture needles are not only not hollow, but they have different diameters so as to bring about different levels of stimulation to the acupoints at different body parts. In one of my older blogs, I talked about how the ancient doctors have acupuncture needles of nine different sizes.
