Inner Practice: Abundance
Five Entities of Worldly Wealth
When we see the words “wealth” and “abundance”, the first thing that comes to mind will definitely be money. Lots of it. The more the better.
Yet this kind of wealth that we are all chasing is sadly, transient. It comes and goes really fast.
In ancient texts, it is said that worldly wealth only belongs to five entities or inheritors or enemies. They are:
1. Fire
2. Water/Floods
3. Unjust Kings and Rulers
4. Thieves and Bandits
5. Unfilial Heirs/Descendants
Fire can destroy wealth and property. Water and floods will wash away all possessions. Wealth can be seized by unjust kings and leaders through excessive taxes and legalities. Wealth can be stolen or robbed. Wealth can also be squandered by irresponsible or wasteful descendants.
Knowing this serves as a reminder to check in on our attitudes towards wealth and if our behavior towards wealth and how we use it fall under any category of the above five entities. As a result, we may have hoarded mountains of gold that cannot be used up this lifetime or squander carelessly on the useless and worthless. If indeed so, it is time to reflect. For wealth is a means and not an end. And we have wasted so much time and energy to hold onto something empty and impermanent, maybe even hurting others or at the expense of other’s happiness in the process.
