Inner Practice: The Magic of Not Knowing
The Myth of the “Perfect Life Plan”
From an early age, we’re taught there’s a “right way” to live:
Graduate.
Land a great job.
Find your soulmate.
Buy a house.
Have 2.5 kids.
Retire comfortably.
Check, check, check.
But real life rarely follows this script.
When you get what you want, that’s when you suffer
Your dream job can morph into a nightmare. You realize you don’t want to get married, or you can’t have kids. Or the plan you meticulously crafted falls apart overnight.
That is suffering number one.
When you get what you want and everything changes.
Because nothing is permanent.
You get the relationship that you want and it stays. You get the job and the money that you wish for, and it flourishes as how you want it to be. You get all your wishes fulfilled.
That is suffering number two.
When you get what you want and you are so afraid of losing it.
Because you have attachments and become so afraid of losing what you have been praying so hard for.
The Magic of Not Knowing
We think if we deviate from the perfect life plan, we will fail. Or look like we have.
Yet certainty is more of an illusion than a guarantee. It is just a symptom for the craving of a sense of control. We want to know where we’re heading and when we’ll get there.
But the beauty of life lies in its unpredictability.
Because life has a funny way of taking us on detours. You fail. You have your heart broken. You suffer a health crisis. All of which don’t fit into any bullet point on a to-do list for the perfect life.
Yet every detour teaches you something about who you are, what you value, and what you want and don’t want. We only get to know ourselves when we fail, stumble or explore new avenues and feel a little lost.
Some people find their dream job at 22, others discover their calling at 55. Timing is wildly personal, and there’s no one-size-fits-all schedule. If you don’t have your dream career, perfect relationship, or grand life plan nailed down by 25 or 45 or 65, you’re definitely not behind. And you are not missing the train everyone else seems to be on.
You are living.
Life isn’t about having all the answers from the start. But asking questions, seeking new perspectives, and being brave enough to move forward without certainty.
You might not know what tomorrow holds, but you do know that you’re growing, learning, and discovering more of who you are each day.
You are not lost.
You are evolving.
Because growth is chaotic.
When you let go of the idea that you must have everything mapped out, you free yourself from the pressure to achieve arbitrary milestones. You give yourself permission to change your mind, take risks, and discover what drives you.
Uncertainty makes you stay curious, flexible, and, most importantly, open.
Because when you are open, the magic finds you.
